How Many Pours Do You Really Get From a Film-Faced Panel?

Short answer

In normal site conditions a 165–185 gsm phenolic film-faced panel with a hardwood core gives 8–15 pours. Panels reach 20–30 only on disciplined sites with careful stripping, prompt cleaning and re-sealed cut edges; on a site that pries panels off with steel bars and stores them in standing water, the same panel gives four. The three variables under your control are film weight, edge sealing, and site handling — and the third one matters most. Compare quotations on cost per pour, which means asking for the film weight and the core species, not just the price.

How Many Pours Do You Really Get From a Film-Faced Panel?

What does film weight change?

Film is specified in grams per square metre: 140, 165, 185 and 220 gsm are the common weights. Heavier film means more phenolic resin on the surface, which resists abrasion from vibrating concrete and alkali attack from cement paste for longer. The step from 140 to 185 gsm typically buys several extra pours for a modest price increase; the step from 185 to 220 gsm pays off only on high-cycle work.

Film weight alone does not save a panel with a weak core. If the core delaminates under load the surface is irrelevant, which is why a hardwood core with WBP glue and a mid-weight film usually outlasts a soft core with heavy film at the same price point.

Why does edge sealing decide panel life?

The film protects two faces. The four edges are exposed end-grain, and that is where water enters, swells the core and lifts the film from underneath. Factory edge sealing with acrylic paint handles the panel as delivered. The moment your site cuts a panel to fit, that cut edge is raw — and if nobody re-seals it, the panel starts failing from the cut.

A tin of edge sealer on site costs almost nothing and routinely adds several pours per panel. It is the highest-return habit in formwork and the one most often skipped because it takes ten minutes nobody scheduled.

How do I compare two panels honestly?

Cost per pour, not price per sheet. Take the delivered price of the sheet, divide by the number of pours you actually achieved with your last batch on your own sites, and compare that figure. A sheet that costs 20% more and lasts 50% longer is cheaper, and a sheet that costs 30% less and lasts half as long is not a saving.

Questions buyers ask about this

Does a black film last longer than a brown film?+

Colour is pigment, not performance. What matters is the resin content, expressed as film weight in gsm, and the quality of the paper carrier. Buy on gsm and manufacturer, not on colour — although a consistent colour across a delivery is a reasonable sign of consistent film sourcing.

Can panels be re-surfaced instead of scrapped?+

Technically yes, and some contractors send panels back for re-facing. Economically it rarely works across an international supply chain because the freight both ways exceeds the value recovered. It is a viable service near the mill, not for an importer.

What structural data do you have for formwork panels?+

Bending strength 66.0 N/mm² parallel and 54.7 N/mm² perpendicular under EN 310, bonding class 3 under EN 314-2, density 0.70 g/cm³ and moisture content 9.2% — all on report HJ-RD-25039. The AS 6669 production line is certified F17 with E 14,419 MPa under CMI ProdCert PC10108. Ask for whichever report covers the product you are buying.
