Short answer
Panels warp when the two faces exchange moisture with the air at different rates. The four specification lines that prevent it are: moisture content at packing (8–12% for plywood, 10–12% for moulding), balanced construction with an odd ply count and symmetrical veneer thicknesses, moisture-barrier packaging on the full stack including the underside, and a written acclimatisation instruction for the receiving warehouse. Panels that arrive flat and then cup in your warehouse were not damaged in transit — they are adjusting to your climate, and 48–72 hours flat on bearers before machining solves it.

What happens inside a container crossing the tropics?
Temperature inside a steel box in the sun reaches well above ambient, then falls at night. Each cycle drives moisture out of the cargo and condenses it on the container roof, from where it drips back onto the top of the stack — the classic 'container rain'. A stack wrapped only on the sides collects that water on its top sheets, which then swell relative to the sheets below.
The fixes are unglamorous and effective: full moisture-barrier wrap over the top of the stack, desiccant bags rated for the container volume and the voyage length, and loading panels that are already at the right moisture content rather than freshly pressed and still warm.
What is a balanced construction, and why does it matter?
A balanced panel has an odd number of plies, grain alternating at 90°, and veneers of matching thickness and species mirrored either side of the centre ply. When both halves react to a humidity change identically, the panel stays flat. Add a thick face on one side and a thin one on the other and the panel becomes a bimetallic strip made of wood.
This is why an unbalanced 'cost saving' — a thinner back veneer to shave a few cents — is the most expensive change a mill can make to your panel. If you see a quotation where face and back thickness differ, ask why before you look at the price.
What should the receiving warehouse do?
Unwrap and stack flat on level bearers, not on edge and not against a wall. Leave 48–72 hours before machining so the panels reach equilibrium with your workshop humidity. Do not store near a loading door where the humidity swings every time it opens, and do not leave a part-used bundle unwrapped over a weekend.

Questions buyers ask about this
The panels arrived flat but cupped a week later. Whose problem is it?+
Usually nobody's fault and entirely preventable. Wood moves with humidity, and a panel made and packed at 10% moisture content will change shape in a warehouse sitting at a much drier or wetter equilibrium. Acclimatise flat before machining. If panels cup even after acclimatisation, that points to unbalanced construction and is a manufacturing question worth raising with the mill.
Should I ask for a moisture reading before loading?+
Yes, and make it part of the pre-shipment inspection: a pin meter reading on a sample of panels across the stack, photographed with the meter display visible. It takes ten minutes and it is the single most useful number in the inspection report for anyone shipping wood across the tropics.
